A Fairer and More Context-Aware Scoring System for Performance Assessment
🧠 About the Asymmetric Rubrics
Asymmetric Rubrics (AR) are a new generation of analytic scoring tools designed to provide more valid, reliable, and equitable performance assessment in education.
Developed by our founder, Dr. Alper Şahin, these rubrics are based on the principles of Asymmetric Theory, bringing a unique lens to assessment through asymmetric prioritization, contextual adaptability, and optimized linearity.
Unlike traditional rubrics that apply uniform weighting and rigid descriptors, Asymmetric Rubrics recognize that not all criteria contribute equally to overall performance.
By using domain-based structure, clearly defined performance indicators, and equal-interval scoring scales, they enhance both scoring precision and inter-rater reliability.
⚙️ How It Works
Each Asymmetric Rubric consists of:
- Distinct domains, each with a specific total score;
- Single-action performance descriptors, written to reflect measurable behavior;
- Equally spaced rating levels, ensuring scoring consistency and transparency;
- Adjustable weighting, allowing instructors or institutions to emphasize learning outcomes aligned with their context.
This design enables more realistic, context-sensitive evaluation — balancing objectivity and human judgment in a measurable, replicable way.
🌍 Research and Development
The Asymmetric Rubrics framework is currently in the academic publication process. However, a related presentation was delivered by Dr. Alper Şahin in 2024, introducing the theoretical foundation, development steps, and field applications of the model in language assessment contexts.
💼 Access and Consultation
Asymmetric Rubrics are free to use for educational institutions and researchers. Institutions wishing to develop customized Asymmetric Rubrics or receive training and consultation for integration into existing assessment systems can reach out us :📧 info@asimetry.com
